CLIFTON ROAD JUNIOR AND INFANT SCHOOLS
about 1905

Clifton Road Junior and Infant Schools opened in 1904 as two separate schools. Clifton Road Junior School was located on the first floor and Clifton Road Infant School was located on the ground floor..  This picture was taken very soon after the school opened-  see by the clothes worn by the pupils outside the school and the vehicle parked in Clifton Road.  Even in the 1960's and 1970's they were two separate schools with their own Head Teachers.

World War Two Teacher- Eiddwen Thomas (right- Second from right)

Eiddwen Thomas was a teacher at Clifton Road School from 1942 until 1946 when she left to marry and live in North Wales.

Eiddwen was recruited from Swansea Training College because it was thought that as the students were used to air raids, they would cope with them in London area.

Class sizes were 45 or more. A lot of marking and lesson preparation needed, and maintaining discipline in such large classes was a challenge.

She was the youngest member of staff and had to guide children in air raids to use the toilets and also guide them home in 'pea-soupers'.

The Pets Corner

In 1966 or 1967 Valerie Singleton from BBC Blue Peter television programme came to open the 'Pets Corner'on one Saturday at the school.  The school had guinea pigs, rabbits, and a couple of kid goats and bantam hens. Valerie Singleton is seen with Head Teacher, Derek Hancock and signing autographs for school children. Photographs by Marcus Taylor.  The photograph with the Cake  also taken by Marcus Taylor but supplied by Nigel Tupman.

'TIME ON THEIR HANDS'

Head Teacher, Derek Hancock and young 23 year old newly qualified teacher, Melvyn Ramsden wrote a play for the school to perform and several evenings were spent running shows for parents and other schools. This 'block-buster' ran for 4 nights, then 3 more, plus day time shows for other local schools.  Notably, St. Anselm's RC School who had an annexe next door in Talbot Road.
A 33 RPM vinyl record was made of the production and 100 copies were sold at 10 shillings each (50p) in 1968.
Here is a scan of the programme and an image of the record label.  Record label image by permission of Nigel Tupman.

Derek Hancock and Melvyn Ramsden both left the school at the end of the Summer Term 1968, the pets corner was demolished and sadly all the enthusiasm and forward thinking education ceased and Clifton Road became just another school again.
Derek Hancock moved to a school in Poole, and Melvyn Ramsden moved to Morecambe in Lancashire.

A PARENTS EVENING  Mid 1960's

Parents evenings were a regular feature of the school.  The teacher is believed to be Mr. Pearce who went on to work as a teacher at Featherstone Primary School.

Seated by the window is the father of Nigel Tupman, and the lady in the light coloured coat looking towards the teacher is Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor, mother of Nick Taylor.  Can anyone help identify any of the other people in the photograph?
