There are many people who were the characters that made Southall what it is.  Any omissions are by reason of ignorance or unavailability and we would welcome any material that would help us to build up a record of those characters or people who made Southall and whom we have not included here

Mr. C.G. Vernon, Headmaster of Southall County School during WW2. Photograph by Marcus Taylor in about 1944.  Marcus had just left attending the school when he took this photograph
Mr. J.J. Wilson of Wilson Houlder Solicitors, 91 South Road.
Among other duties, he was Clerk to the southall and Norwood Burial Committee.
Mr. Loaring owned an iron mongers shop in King Street in the 1920's

Father Buckle. He was the Roman Catholic Father in Southall when St. Anselm's Church was located in the Manor House converted  agricultural barn
Charlie Woods and Harry Bland.  Two Southall business people.  Charlie Woods built the vast housing estate that stretches from Southall Town Hall up Lady Maraget Road and across to Greenford covering Dormers Wells. Harry Bland was involved in many local enterprises and was a local philanthropist

Marcus Taylor in 1942, aged 14. He took the photographs of the guns being moved from the British Legion at age 12. See WW1 & II page, and took many wedding and newspaper photographs whilst still at school
Leonard George Taylor Professional Photographer, Manor Studio, Southall from 1931 to early 1960's.  Before Manor Studio, lived at 17a King Street (over the Maypole  Dairy shop.

 Left: A studio portrait sample taken by Merriman who had a photographic studio in Southall in the first two decades of the twentieth century. He sold the business to a Mr. Charlesworth, who in 1930 sold it to Leonard & Olive Taylor (Manor Studio).  The subject is not known, but is a good example of the type of work undertaken at that time

Frank Jennings.  AEC Photographer 1950's-1960's.

During WW2 He drove tank transporters, and afterwards was employed by AEC and became their photographer after receiving training from Leonard Taylor of Manor Studio.

The Martin Brothers pottery was located at Top Lock at the end of Havelock Road between 1874 and 1914.  They transported their produce to their London shop by canal.  Charles Martin is shown  here in their Holborn shop (above).

John McNeillie and his wife Sheila.  John McNeillie was born in Scotland but grew up in Southall.  He worked for the Southall edition of the Middlesex County Gazette.  Whilst at the Gazette, he lived with the Taylor's at 57 The Green (Manor Studio), and wrote his first of some 40 books 'Wigtown Ploughman' whilst lodging there..

 

He is reported in his biography written by his son Andrew that on leaving the County School, to have been asked by the Head Master, (C.G. Vernon)  what he would do, and when told he was to be a writer, Veron is reported to have said "you will starve McNeillie'.  As well as authoring over 40 books, he wrote articles for Country Life for 40 years. All but the first three books written under the name Ian Niall.

Does anyone know what
he did?

John Smith of Middlesex Regiment with his two daughters, Caroline and Rosina.

The photograph was taken around the end of World War One.  John Smith went on to work at the jam factory in 1920.

The family lived at no.65 Adelaide Road.

LEFT: Henry Phelps Baxter

H.P. Baxter founded the Barn Mission Church in about 1860.  It is still in use at 9 Norwood Road.  Originally it was located in a building on 'The Farm' which was about 3 minutes walk from Southall station.  He permitted the Martin Brothers (potters) to use a shed at his farm at The Grange which was leased from the Earl of Jersey.  He retired to 84 Gordon Road, Ealing selling The Grange in 1898.

The above dedication still hangs in the Church of God Mission building at 9 Norwood Road Southall 160 years after the Barn Mission was established by Mr. Baxter in the Barn Mission building 3 minutes walk from Southall Station.
